Advances in the design and reliability of modern aircraft, together with investment in pilot training and maintenance technicians training, have contributed to this impressive achievement. Continuous enhancement and harmonization of training standards and programs are essential to maintain this safety record. 

Enhancing pilot training and licensing to support operational safety and efficiency

Support our efforts to continuously enhance pilot training programs globally, by completing the IATA Training Criticality Survey (TCS). The objective of the TCS is to capture your feedback, as a pilot, on the threats and errors encountered in operations, and your perception on how effective training could be as a mitigating measure.

Our priorities are:

  1. Proposing solutions to attract the younger generations to the aviation industry to ensure availability of a qualified workforce in the cockpit
  2. Supporting new training methodologies such as Multi-Crew Pilot License Training (MPL) and Evidence-Based Training (EBT), in a competency-based training and assessment framework
  3. Promoting regulatory harmonization and market permeability to meet the needs of the aviation industry

Air travel is expected to double in the next two decades. A global requirement for 255,000 new airline pilots over the next ten years, for a total of 440,000 pilots by 2027 is forecasted.

Many operators are already experiencing a shortage of a qualified workforce. To secure the future pilot pipeline, operators around the world have implemented, or are in the process of implementing, innovative strategies to attract the younger generations and to facilitate the pathway to a career as a pilot.

Here are some best practices implemented by the members of the IATA Pilot Training Task Force:

Engineering & maintenance

Competency-based training (CBT) for engineering and maintenance personnel, working in aircraft and component maintenance organizations, is oriented to establish a workforce being competent to perform a defined set of maintenance tasks to defined standards.

In a traditional educational system, the training is centered on subject contents and the delivery of instruction is time-based and teacher-centered.  In a Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) program, the delivery is based on training needs to perform defined tasks, and it is learner centered.

    • The first step in a CBTA program is the analysis of the training needs by identifying the gap between existing competencies and required competencies to fulfill defined tasks to a defined standard (quality and performance standards)
    • The training process requires an entry assessment of the individuals who will participate in the program, and the minimum requirements that have to be met
    • The next step will be the development of the training method needed to fill the competency gaps
